Noel Guevara, Philippines, commended at the world’s largest photography competition -  2017 Sony World Photography Awards

Note: I am one of six commended photographers from the Philippines.

The judges of the 2017 Sony World Photography Awards today honour the work of Filipino photographer Noel Guevara, whose image “Sabrina” is commended as top 50 in the world in the awards’ Open Portrait category.

Over 227,000 images from 183 countries were submitted to the 2017 Sony World Photography Awards.  Noel, who is based in Manila, is recognised as a commended photographer alongside the shortlisted photographers of the Professional, Open, Youth and Student Focus competitions, all of which are also announced today.

In the Open competition, judges were looking for the best single images across ten categories, representing the finest contemporary photography today.

Noel Guevara is an award-winning director and photographer from the Philippines. Noel started out as an underwater wildlife photographer, and only shifted to portrait and commercial photography this year. “Sabrina” is his first portrait work, in which he wanted a classic, high-fashion look that is reminiscent of old Japanese photographs in an effort to give homage to his subject’s heritage.

Noel notes: “This is an incredible honor. Being recognized by the Sony World Photography Awards is one thing—being recognized for your first work in a new genre (portraiture) is something else entirely. I am excited for what this commendation will bring for me and I can’t wait to see my work exhibited in London”

The category winners for the Open competition will be announced March 28, and the overall Open Photographer of the Year title revealed April 20 at an awards ceremony in London.  Prizes include the latest Sony digital imagery equipment, and a $5,000 cash prize.

As a commended photographer, Noel’s  image will be shown alongside the awards’ other commended plus the shortlisted and winning images at the Sony World Photography Awards & Martin Parr – 2017 Exhibition in London from April 21-May 7.  The commended image will also be given a global audience as it is published on the World Photography Organisation website.
