FAO Photo Mission: Apo Reef
The first part of a photo project for the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) - Fisheries and Aquaculture Division. On assignment for Panos Pictures UK.
An expedition to the second largest contiguous reef in the world, Apo Reef in Negros Occidental, Philippines, to document the biodiversity and success of a well-managed marine protected area.
Clear visibility, rushing currents, and perfect weather combined allowed for encounters with schools of Bumphead Parrotfish, Blackfin Barracudas, Bigyeye Jacks, Fusiliers, Breams, and Rainbow Runners. Turtles were all over, Devil Rays were breaching on the surface, and a rather large cuttlefish even made an appearance.
Also worth noting are the beautiful, expansive coral reef systems that lined the shallows around Apo Island.
