A diver swims surrounded by Bigeye Jacks (Caranx sexfasciatus) over lush, thriving reef cover in Delsan Wreck, South Atoll, Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park, Philippines.
I wasn't meant to take this photo. After photographing huge schools of these jacks day after day for a week, I've grown tired of them as subjects. My dive buddy then asked if he could just swim inside the school if I wasn't going to shoot—something he loves doing. I said yes, and as he swam into it, I saw this shot forming in front of me. I waited for the right moment and pressed the shutter. This is undoubtedly my favorite photo taken in Tubbataha.
This photo was used for Tubbataha Reefs' 35th anniversary billboard, which was installed in the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 2 in Manila. It has also appeared in magazines and broadsheets.
Photographed in Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park, 2018.
