"Dire Wolf " is a portrait of the Canadian Eskimo Dog, which is one of the oldest and rarest purebred indigenous domestic breeds in North America. As an arctic working dog, the Qimmit (Inuit for dog) were the workhorses of the northern Indigenous communities, pulling loads over long distances as part of dogsled teams. They were brought to North America from Siberia by the Thule people over a thousand years ago.

Unfortunately, 1,200 to 20,000 of these dogs were systematically slaughtered by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RMCP) between 1950 and 1970 to intimidate and disrupt the Inuit way of life. As such, the breed is currently threatened with extinction, with approximately 300 purebred dogs remaining scattered in the subarctic and arctic circle.

This breed gained popularity recently in a YouTube video in which they played and sparred with polar bears. The video was shot in a private pen dedicated to the conservation of these dogs. The polar bears loitered in the same area, waiting to scavenge for leftover dog feed. Daily proximity between the two species led to an unlikely tolerance and, at times, fondness of each other.

"Dire Wolf" was shot in the same pen in Churchill, Manitoba, Canadian Subarctic in 2018.
